Dickens: A Family Holiday Experience, presented by Adelska, takes place from 4-8 p.m. Dec. 11 at Four Mile Historic Park, 715 S. Forest St. in Denver.
Tickets cost $50 for adults and youth age 12 and older, $25 for children ages 4-11, and children age 3 and younger have free entry.

Thanks to a holiday event that’s new this year, people will have an opportunity to step back in time to the 1800s.
Presented by Adelska, which is a Denver-based entertainment company, Dickens: A Family Holiday Experience will be an immersive, choose-your-own-adventure theater attraction inspired by Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” It takes place from 4-8 p.m. Dec. 11 at Four Mile Historic Park, 715 S. Forest St. in Denver.
“Last year’s holiday season was missing some magic due to the pandemic, so when we thought about the 2021 holiday season, we really wanted to create a truly unique and memorable experience suitable for the whole community,” said Gretchen Bartek, founder and CEO of Adelska. “A Christmas Carol is such an iconic story that captures the spirit of the season, and we cannot wait to bring it to life through all of the various elements this one-night event will have to offer.”
The various elements is how the choose-your-own-adventure comes in. In addition to immersive theater — the “A Christmas Carol” narrative will be played out along the path through the park — attendees will have the opportunity to ice skate, explore the park’s 10 acres decorated with festive lights, interact with carolers, attend a story time with Charles Dickens, visit with Santa and shop at a holiday market. Food and drink options for additional purchase include a gourmet hot chocolate-and-smores bar, food trucks and a full bar offering holiday cocktails for attendees age 21 and older.
“Immersive theater is becoming more of the norm as people discover how wonderful it is to be a part of something, rather than just watching it passively,” said Leah Cardenas, creative director for Adelska. “Our audience will get to follow along with Ms. Scrooge as she learns about her past, present and future, and help her to see the kindness and love that this time of year can bring.”
The intent is to “create a special holiday experience that goes beyond the holiday lightshow where families are immersed in new theatrical traditions,” added Breena Siegel, event planner for Adelska.
Another inspiration for the event was Four Mile Historic Park itself. Bartek, of south Denver, enjoys the park and thought it would make a great setting to create a special experience that a whole family can engage in. But not only that — “A Christmas Carol” was written in 1843, which is the same decade that the Four Mile house was built, Bartek said.
“The holidays can be a magical time of storytelling and tradition,” Siegel said. “I’m most excited for families to step into a playful world where they get an experience, in addition to the traditional Santa visit and holiday marketplace.”
