Beer and burgers simply go well together.

That was the idea when Patrick Crawford and Charlie Berger, co-owners of the Denver Beer Co., joined up with Brendan McManus and James Samara and their The Mighty Burger concept about three years ago in Arvada.

Now, the two teams of business partners are bringing their brewery and burger joint to the Washington Park area.

“We hope this new taproom will become a community gathering place and hub for the surrounding south Denver neighborhoods,” Crawford said in a news release.

Denver Beer Co. is aiming to host a grand opening at its new location at 2425 S. Downing St., which is on the border of the Rosedale and University neighborhoods, this summer.

The property purchase, which Denver Beer Co. announced in January, includes two buildings and about 10,000 square feet of patio and lawn spaces. The vision is to create a gathering spot that is family-friendly, as well as a place to hang out with friends and/or meet new people. Crawford and Berger intend on featuring an outdoor tiki bar, fire pits, yard games and communal beer garden tables.

“We’re all about fun,” Berger said, adding the new taproom will be a place where people can get together and “talk about what’s happening in their neighborhood.”

Berger and Crawford opened their first Denver Beer Co. brewery and taproom in Denver’s Highland in 2007. That was followed with Denver Beer Co.’s production brewery called Canworks in Sunnyside, then Olde Town Arvada’s Denver Beer Co. in 2017.

“This is our opportunity to bring our beer a little farther south,” Berger said.

Berger added that he lives near the recently purchased property, and “stumbled upon” the opportunity to establish a Denver Beer Co. taproom there after the restaurant that was formerly operating there — Maddie’s Restaurant — had closed.

Craft beer available at Denver Beer Co.’s new taproom will include the brewery’s flagship brews — Princess Yum Yum Raspberry Kolsch and Incredible Pedal IPA, for example — rotating seasonals and additional beers exclusive to the new location. Berger and Crawford expect the head brewers at each of their locations to collaborate and share recipes, the news release states.

Denver Beer Co. plans on offering two eatery options at the new location. The Mighty Burger will share the larger building, which is 2,563 square feet, with the brewery’s taproom; and another restaurant partner for the smaller building, which is 761 square-feet, is to be determined.

McManus and Samara began their partnership with Berger and Crawford when Denver Beer Co. opened its Arvada taproom. There, the Mighty Burger operates out of a vintage airstream food truck that’s permanently parked at the brewery.

McManus and Samara own four restaurant concepts — The Mighty Burger in Arvada; Lucky Pie pizza which has three locations, including one in Lodo; El Jefe Mexican food in Sunnyside; and OK Poke inside Zeppelin Station in RiNo.

But the two restaurateurs decided to bring The Mighty Burger to Denver Beer Co.'s new location because it’s “a natural fit,” McManus said.

“People love the burger and it pairs well with the craft beer,” he said.

However, the menu will be expanded to include additional sandwiches and salads, McManus said. The Mighty Burger will have a much larger space than in Arvada, McManus said, in addition to the location already having a functional commercial kitchen inside the building.

“You can’t go wrong with a burger and a beer,” McManus said. But the “variety (of the expanded menu) is also going to please the guests.”

Berger expects the Denver Beer Co. taproom to be a spectacular beer garden, food venue and hangout/gathering spot, he said.

“Beer is a natural beverage for bringing people together,” Berger said. “This (Denver Beer Co. taproom) will bring even more life to an already wonderful location.”
