Following an Oct. 5 public hearing for transformative redevelopment of Aspen Grove, council scheduled a Nov. 9 vote. Developers would carve up existing parking space for 2,000 residential units, a hotel, and structures up to 85 feet tall.
Proponents imagine no consequent traffic congestion increases on Santa Fe and Mineral, no adverse South Platte Park visitor impacts from thousands living right next door, no increased tax burden for associated huge service infrastructure services, and no tax revenue loss — committed to maintain only half of existing retail space. Catering to developers, Littleton’s community development staff recommended approval. Will council also cave into staff and ignore expressed citizen concerns?
Another public hearing on Oct. 19 was scheduled for a new zoning code ordinance. Here also, Mineral-Santa Fe real estate is squarely in developers’ cross hairs. Written to implement the new Comprehensive Plan to ostensibly maintain community character, the new code would allow area building heights up to 91 feet. A Planning Commission majority approved the ordinance.
All of which is supported by a Community Development’s accommodation of redevelopment greed and what is called economic development. Being repeatedly urged by citizens to steward or care for the city’s most distinctive character, a top city administrator claims there is inadequate staff. Of course not, it’s preoccupied, chumming developers. Will council also cave into the development machine here while ignoring adversely impacted publics?
